Here's a short list of helpful hints that will help increase the Pura Vida and help avoid vacation mishaps.

  • Bring extra memory and batteries for your camera.
  • Make sure that all of your US bills are perfect. Costa Rican banks won't accept torn or marked dollars, so most businesses won't either.
  • Speaking of cash, bring extra. Many businesses don't accept credit cards and ATM machines are tough to find outside San Jose.
  • If you plan to drive, pick up a Spanish phrase book to help you decipher the road signs. Of course, this will help everywhere.
  • Bring along a copy or two of your passport I.D. page and carry it with you. Keep the actual passport somewhere safe.
  • If you rent a car, leave it empty. Some folks also leave the car doors unlocked to prevent broken windows.
  • Don't bring pre-paid calling cards with toll-free numbers. They don't work in Costa Rica. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise.
  • Remember to bring plenty of sun block.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a passport and/or visa?
Travelers from the US and Canada need a valid passport for at least 6 months after the day of arrival to enter Costa Rica. Nationals from all other countries are required to do so. If you have to do any banking during your stay, or if you decide to make a trip to Nicaragua or Panama, you'll need your passport. ( back to top ▲ )

How do I get there?
Getting to the Iguanazul is easy! Visit our
Maps page to find out how! ( back to top ▲ )

Is the Iguanazul kid-friendly?
Absolutely! Kids of all ages can enjoy the Iguanazul. The shallowest part of our pool is 4ft., so it helps if they're good swimmers, but with a pair of water wings and a pair of watchful eyes even the tiniest vacationer can take a dip. We've got a sand volleyball court that doubles as a giant sandbox and of course the beaches provide endless hours of fun! ( back to top ▲ )

Does the hotel have a restaurant?
Yes, our internationally trained kitchen staff prepares the best dishes around. We offer an assortment of international and local cuisine. With its gorgeous view and friendly staff, you will see why our bar and restaurant has become a local favorite. We specialize in fresh fish, choice steaks, chicken, pastas and salads. Our restaurant is open from 7 am to 10 pm daily. For the early risers, complimentary Costa Rican coffee is brewed and ready every morning in the dining room. If your plans take you away for the day, please ask and we'll prepare a lunch to go. ( back to top ▲ )

How's the area's nightlife?
The "Lizard Lounge" as our bar is affectionately known is often the spot for late night carousing, or if you want to dance, your stay here will almost always coincide with a local dance . That's "baile" (bai-lay) if you want to get native. These dances will give you a great dose of Guanacaste's culture and if you dare, you can salsa and merengue the night away! For you hardcore party people Tamarindo (about 40 minutes away) and Nicoya (an hour) both have happening' discos that never fail to provide entertainment into the wee hours. ( back to top ▲ )

What's to do nearby?
Some guests are here to kick back and do nothing but relax and unwind, but for those of you who like a balance of adventure and hammock time we can arrange just about anything you're interested in. Check our What to Do page for more info.

Any local fiestas coming up?
There are local dances almost every weekend and during the high season there is almost always a local "fiesta" (three days of bullriding, dancing and general revelry) in a town nearby. Check out the latest IguanaTales for details! ( back to top ▲ )

To 4x4 or not to 4x4.
That really is a frequently asked question. As long as it won't break your bank or cause you to skimp on other parts of your trip, four wheel drive can definitely enhance your time here. Whether your dying to know what is making that noise on the other side of the river that's so rudely intersecting the "highway," or your just enjoying the higher ride (better for spotting monkeys!) and pothole clearance, you'll be happy to have it.
However, if you can't swing it, or if you're planning on getting here from the airport and just doing some very local traveling you'll do fine with a two- wheel drive machine.
And don't forget! We are happy to help you out with your rental reservation. We'll shop around for the best rates and find you the nicest ride we can. ( back to top ▲ )

Does the Iguanazul have weekly or monthly rates?
We love long-timers and are always willing to help you out on our rates if that means we'll have you around for a little while longer. Contact us and let's make a deal!

How can I get to the Iguanazul without a car?
There are several options for you ranging from very expensive to rather cheap. You be the judge:

  • Taxi from the airport to the hotel. A 3.5 hour ride that will cost you about $150, but give you a great opportunity to brush up on your Spanish with the driver.
  • Fly from the International airport to Tamarindo. This flight leaves four times a day, lasts about 50 minutes and costs $65 one-way. From Tamarindo you'll need to grab a cab. The 40 minute ride costs about $45 and if you call us ahead of time, we'll make sure there's a taxi waiting for you.
  • Bus from San Jose to Santa Cruz. This 4 1/2 hour ride will cost you approximately $7. Once in Santa Cruz you can connect with local bus out to the beach or you can take the 35 minute taxi ride for about $20.
  • Fly into Liberia and then take a bus to Santa Cruz. See above for directions from Santa Cruz.
  • Fly into Liberia on an International fligh, then take a taxi from airport to the Iguanazul (about US$60.00). Click here to see our how to get here page.
